Anti-Aging
Mitochondrial autophagy is impaired with age and several age-related diseases. Restoring normal functioning levels of mitochondrial autophagy is a promising way to counteract age-related declines in organ function. Mitochondrial autophagy occurs when mitochondria are damaged or after exposure to external mitochondrial autophagy inducers, and in the case of impaired autophagy, whereas uroplakin A is regulated through 2 regulatory pathways, restores mitochondrial autophagy, generates autophagosomal vesicles, engulfs the damaged mitochondria and binds to the lysosome to normalise overall mitochondrial autophagy function.
Mitochondria are often referred to as the engine of the energy source, and the role of urolithin A is to clean up the engine when it is damaged and needs to be scrapped, carry it to the processing plant for scrapping, and at the same time, the cell factory produces a new mitochondrial transmitter.
Improved Cognitive Function
Some researchers conducted a 5-month study of long-term treatment with urolithin A using several Alzheimer's disease AD mouse models. The results showed that long-term treatment significantly improved learning, memory, and olfactory function, reduced pathological changes in amyloid (Aβ) and tau proteins, and improved cytolysosomal function in the mice.
Electrophysiological experiments demonstrated that urolithin A significantly increased long-duration potentiation in the hippocampus of AD mice, a key neural mechanism for learning and memory formation. Urocitin A was also able to modulate the immune response in AD mice, which may help to attenuate the neuroinflammation associated with AD.
Improve Muscle Health
Uricetin A also shows great potential for improving muscle health, with studies showing that doses of 500 to 1,000 mg can significantly improve muscle strength, increase muscle fatigue resistance, and enhance athletic performance in older adults. Long-term moderate intake of urolithin A has been shown to have clinically significant effects on muscle strength, more efficient mitochondrial utilization, and a significant reduction in overall inflammation levels. Therefore, urolithin A can be used as a nutritional intervention to support muscle health and eliminate inflammation.
Neuroprotective
Uricetin A is neuroprotective in Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cerebral haemorrhage. In a study using mice with traumatic brain injury as a model, it was even found that urolithin A reduced blood-brain barrier permeability and neuronal apoptosis in the damaged cortex and improved neurological function in the mice, and it may even be a candidate for the treatment of traumatic brain injury.
Promoting Mitochondrial Autophagy
It has been found that by promoting mitochondrial autophagy, urolithin A helps cells remove dysfunctional mitochondria and maintain mitochondrial homeostasis. Mitochondria are the "energy factories" within the cell, and their homeostasis is essential for normal cell function and longevity. Through this pathway, urolithin A contributes to the extension of cellular lifespan and the slowing down of the aging process.
Reversing the Aging of Haematopoietic Stem Cells
A team of researchers from the University of Lausanne and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, led by Nicola Vannini, published an article titled "Urocitin A reverses the blood reconstitution capacity of 'senescent' haematopoietic stem cells" in the journal Nature Aging in August 2023. The team found that urolithin A was able to reverse the senescence of haematopoietic stem cells in aging mice, restoring their haematopoietic function. This study further highlights the key role of mitochondrial homeostasis in the regulation of urolithin A, which restores the viability of haematopoietic stem cells by improving their mitochondrial function.
Applications:
For Healthcare Products:
Uricetin A has antioxidant properties that can scavenge free radicals from the body and slow down the aging process. Secondly, urolithin A has anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve inflammation and reduce symptoms such as pain and swelling. In addition, urolithin A also has antibacterial and antiviral effects, which have an important impact on human health. In 2018, the FDA approved urolithin A for use in dietary supplements. It received GRAS certification from the US Food and Drug Administration, which indicates that its safety is recognized by the authority and can be used as a food ingredient. Urolithin A powder has been used as a nutraceutical ingredient.
